About

Shark Society was founded in the late 1980s by Tom Kraus, a scuba diving enthusiast with a background in both tech/military and commercial diving. Since then, he has been based in various locations, including Southern California, Costa Rica, Thailand, Egypt, and South Africa.

Tom, originally from Germany, is known for his less-than-perfect English, which he attributes to his heritage. He did maintain during his active (as daily) involvement up-to-date instructor certifications with PADI, NAUI and DAN, carries a international commercial skippers license for vessels up to 15 meters and is committed to adhering to the latest industry standards in scuba diving.

Our valued clients have joined us in diving at various renowned locations, such as:

  • The Red Sea: Hurghada (Sha'ab Abu Nuhas/Ghiannis D., Carless Reef), Sharm el Sheikh (Thistlegorm, White Knights)
  • The Maldives: Maayaafushi
  • Thailand: Phuket
  • South Africa: Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks
  • Mozambique: Tofo Beach
  • Madagascar: Nosy Be
  • Mexico: Socorro Islands, Sea of Cortez, Cabo Pulmo, Isla Guadalupe

After partially relocating to the beautiful Cabo San Lucas from San Diego - where we had already been diving in Cabo San Lucas and the Socorro Islands - Shark Society temporarily ceased full-fledged dive charter operations. During this period, we were locally connected to a tourism operation that did not align with our original focus on scuba diving and a passion for sharks.

Driven by his love for diving, Tom Kraus returned to his roots, and Shark Society resumed its original mode of operation. We live by the saying, "Scuba divers are the modern gypsies," and operate out of different "base camps" depending on the season and dive conditions.

Shark Society is a small enterprise. Our team - who we prefer not to call "employees" - is driven by a passion for what they do. All team members are PADI-certified, come from various nationalities, and share extensive experience and enthusiasm for shark diving.

Shark Society continues to operate at the same professional level and with the same commitment that has made us a small, personalized operation with many returning clients. Divers come to us as clients and leave as friends.
