Mexico Westcoast
Mexico, a very popular vacation destination for Europeans as well Northamericans has a wide varity of recreational activities to offer. Scuba diving is one of the more popular ones, yet Mexico and scuba diving is in many eyes about Yucatan and Cozumel on the Caribic site of Mexico. No doubt, great scuba diving destinations in that part of Mexico.
However, we here at Shark Society do concentrate more to the western coast of Mexico, more exact, the Baja California Peninsula with the Pacific Ocean and the option to dive with Great White Sharks at Guadalupe Island as well the Sea of Cortez with Hammerhead Sharks and Whale Sharks.
The Sea of Cortez is place to observe schooling hammerheads that congregate at El Bajo at all times of year. El Bajo is probably the most famous dive site in the Sea of Cortez. These three adjacent sea mounts lie a 25km from Los Islotes, well out of sight of land.
The nutrient rich waters make for a spectacular population of fishes from small inshore dwellers to large schools of jack, tuna, dolphin, and "sportfish" such as dorado and marlin. There are resident colonies of sea lions and migratory visits from whales and hammerhead sharks. A fortunate scuba diver may also encounter manta rays, and even whale sharks in the plentiful waters of the Sea of Cortez.
Until a several years ago, photographers and shark lovers took long flights to South Africa and Southern Australia to get a fleeting glimpse of a great white shark underwater. These days, photographers are flocking to Isla Guadalupe in Baja California, Mexico, because it offers nearly guaranteed white shark encounters in clear, blue water!
